Workshop Title: Developing Research Questions and Designing Studies for Your TBL Activities

Faculty and Institutions: Nicole J. Borges, PhD, Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, Michael E. Petty, PhD, Rush University, and Sandy Cook, PhD, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore.

Background: Team-Based Learning is still relatively ‘new’ in the health sciences domain. Few empirical studies exist on TBL and there is much that can be contributed to the educational literature. The leaders of this session are all medical education researchers and will work with participants to identify research interests, develop research questions, and design studies around their TBL activities.

Specific Objectives: At the end of the session, the learners will:

1.      Identify their research and scholarship interests

2.      Design a research project around their interests

3.      Form collaborative research partnerships across institutions

Format/Methods: 90 minutes total

Introductions (10 min)

TBL research in health professions education: Past and Present  (15 minutes)

Things to consider when designing TBL studies (15 minutes)

Individually and in small groups attendees work on formulating a research question/hypothesis and study design (30 min total—5 min individually and 25 min small group)

Developing a research question: (attendees work individually)

What is it that you do with Team-Based Learning?

What interests you about what you do?

1) Share ideas in small group. Attendees work to formulate research idea into a research question. Workshop session leaders facilitate small groups.

2) Discuss Study Design: From whom would you need to collect data to answer your research question? When would you need to collect the data? Would there be multiple groups from which to collect data? Data analysis?

Large group sharing of research ideas and ideas for networking with folks (sharing ideas, collaborating on projects, mentorship) (20 min)

 Length of Workshop: 90 minutes

This workshop is best for both beginners and advanced.
